Don Cross

My name is Donald (Don) Cross & I live near Newton, Ia.  I owned and operated my own Allis-Chalmers/AGCO business for 40 years and retired in 2006. I have worked for a guide for several game farms including Highland and Aiming for a Cure for the past couple of years.  I have always enjoyed people and the outdoors, hunting and fishing and especially working with my 4 German Shorthair Pointers.

I have been guiding for Highland since 2004 using German Shorthair Pointers out of Top Gun Kennels. I started hunting pheasants when I was 12. I also hunt deer, turkey, ducks and geese. I also enjoy fishing and spending time with my family.

I have been chasing Ringnecks around the State of Iowa for 32yrs. Growing up in Iowa I always had dogs, but they were all flushing breeds. In 1995 I bought my first German Shorthaired Pointer as a family pet. As fate would have it, she could hunt. Since 1995 I have owned and trained seven German Shorthaired Pointers and currently own three dogs. Deja is my 6yr old German Shorthair, Gracie is my 13 month old Vizsla and lastly is Tina my 5 month old Vizsla. I became acquainted with Highland Hideaway Hunting in 2005 when I was invited to come hunt with a business associate. That one experience was so positive that we have purchased a custom corporate package every year since and have participated in the Aiming for a Cure Charity event, the Ronald McDonald House Charity Shoot, and the list goes on. Not only does Highland Hideaway Hunting provide a top quality upland hunting experience, but Ron, Ryan and Kate are committed to doing what they can to give back to the community.

As an avid wild bird hunter I understand that having a well trained versatile hunting companion can make the difference in the success of the hunt. Our family’s goal is to teach others how to train and breed better, more versatile hunting companions. Together with my wife, Jodie and daughter, Rachel, we have a Family business in breeding, raising, training German Shorthaired Pointers (Top Gun Kennels). Our greatest reward is seeing others whom we’ve shared  knowledge and experience with succeed in reaching their training, hunting and personal goals. With 15 years experience I have also had the opportunity to be the guide service for several premier hunting preserves in the Midwest including Highland Hideaway of Riverside, Iowa. I recently guided for the Former Governor Vilsack at the Iowa Governor’s Hunt. Our Family was recently recognized as having the 2006 German Shorthair Pointer Club of America’s Top Producing sire in “FC Top Gun Jake MH UT”.  I am also very proud the Our Family is also the Founders of the ‘Aiming for a Cure Foundation’, raising money for children and Families dealing with cancer at the Children’s Hospital of Iowa at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Development funds are used for supporting research, pediatric oncology needs at the hospital, and care for the children and their Families during hospital stays.
